Cognizance of Android and iOS

This report firstly focuses on the various versions of Android and IOS. Secondly the number of Android and IOS users across the global. Thirdly the Android and IOS version distribution and lastly the most downloaded applications & the number of applications in App store and Play store. The various versions developed by the Android i.e. Google are 13 versions which are named after sweets and American chocolates and versions developed by IOS i.e. Apple are 11 versions.

The no of users of Android and IOS across the globe are 87% and 12% respectively. And in India 80% are of Android users and 4% are of IOS users. Android has a more market share in developing nations like Asia and Africa while iOS leads the market in developed countries like US, Australia, Europe etc. India market for a company such as Apple has still not hit the inflexion point. But the company is in the right direction and the market is reacting accordingly.

Google says there are now 1.4 billon active Android devices worldwide and Apple disclosed that it has 1 billion active devices. The categories of most downloaded applications on Google Play store are Communications, Tools, Social and Games and the most downloaded applications on App store is similar to the categories of Play store. Those are Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, Netflix, Subway surf, Temple run, Uber, Amazon, Candy crush saga etc. Google’s Play store has 2.8 million apps. Apple’s App store remained the second-largest app store with 2.2 million available apps.

The statistic shows the distribution of Android platform versions used by Android smartphone owners in April 2018. The figures are based on the number of Android devices that have accessed the Google Play Store within a 7-day period ending on April 6th, 2018.

18 percent of Android mobile devices used Lollipop 5.1.

23 percent of Android mobile devices used Nought 7.0.

26 percent of Android mobile devices used Marshmallow 6.0.

No. of Android and IOS users across the globe

Of the 432 million smartphones sold in the last quarter, 352 million ran Android (81.7 percent) and 77 million ran iOS (17.9 percent). But what happened to the other players? Well, in the same quarter, Windows Phone managed to round up 0.3 percent of the market, while BlackBerry was reduced to a rounding error.

Google says there are now 1.4 billion active Android devices worldwide. The company now has seven services which have reached 1 billion users: Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome, Gmail, Search, and Google Play. 

Apple disclosed in its latest financial report that it has 1 billion active devices –including iPhones, iPads, Mac computers, Apple TVs, iPods, and Apple Watches — in use around the world, CNET reports.

Apple has 588 million users worldwide.

As of 2017, Android and iOS devices combined make up over 97% of the mobile OS market share. Android has over 64% of the mobile market share as compared to the 32% sharing of iOS. This clearly indicates that the number of Android users is almost double that of iOS users.

Android has a more market share in developing nations like Asia and Africa while iOS leads the market in developed countries like US, Australia, Europe etc. This may be due to the various cultural and socio-economic factors that are in play in the local geographies

Global smartphone shipments fell 2 percent annually from 353.8 million units in Q1 2017 to 345.4 million in Q1 2018. The global smartphone market has slowed down this year, due to longer replacement rates, diminishing carrier subsidies, and a lack of new hardware design innovation.

Apple grew an above-average 3 percent annually and shipped 52.2 million smartphones for 15 percent market share worldwide in Q1 2018.

In April 2018, Android held a share of 82.07 percent of the mobile operating system market in India. And iOS stands at 2.81 percent.

Android held a share of 82.89 percent of the mobile operating system market in Africa. And iOS stands at 10.59 percent.

The market share of Android has been increasing since 2010 and stood at 71.64 percent in 2018. On the other hand, iOS has been decreasing since 2010 and stood at 26.55 percent in 2018.

In April 2018, iOS held a share of 53.6 percent of the mobile operating system market in the United States. And Android held a share of 45.79 percent.

Android held a share of 76.81 percent of the mobile operating system market in Africa. And iOS stands at 6.2 percent.

Bitmoji, Snapchat, YouTube, Messenger, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, Netflix, Spotify, Uber, Gmail, Pandora Music, Amazon, WhatsApp, Wish, Twitter, SoundCloud, Google Chrome, Waze, Lyft.

When it comes to paid apps, the top spots went to Face tune, guitar-learning app Tabs & Chords, and scheduling app Hot Schedules. 

On the gaming side, the most popular app should also come as no surprise: Nintendo’s Super Mario Run. Pool simulation 8 Ball Pool was close behind at #2, followed by Snake VS BlockBallz, and Word Cookies!

The most popular Apple App Store categories in March 2017, as a share of available apps on the platform are as follows; games proved to be the most popular during that month with a 25.04 percent share. Business apps were ranked second with a 9.88 percent share and educational apps came third with a 8.47 percent share. At the other end of the list, shopping apps only accounted for 1.29 percent of available apps.

This statistic contains data on the number of apps available for download in leading app stores as of March 2017. As of that month, Android users were able to choose between 2.8 million apps. Apple’s App Store remained the second-largest app store with 2.2 million available apps.

Currently, there are 1,252,777 apps available in the App Store, and as many as 60 thousand apps are added per month – and this rate is itself growing. In 2013,453,902 new apps were released in the Apple App Store, exceeding adjust’s prediction of over 435,100 new apps by 4 percent.

The number of available apps in the Google Play Store was most recently placed at 3.5 million apps in December 2017, after surpassing 1 million apps in July 2013.
